Please realize that this movie stars Alexander Skarsgard who played Tarzan in the movie The Legend of Tarzan. Then, you will realize that the story told in Hold the Dark is an antithesis of a Tarzan saga.
Yes, this film is deep so unlike a “zombie, vampire, wolf man” genre in that this star is completely “Unnatural”, yet also human in looks; every bit the part of a so-called action hero. (No FX fantasy props needed). This makes the film very disarming and requires deep thinking to understand why Vernon and Medora Sloane act the way they do. Jeffery Wright pulls the story together as Russell Core, the wolf researcher and writer. Almost every word he speaks gives clues as to the meaning behind the horrific crimes.
Above all, you will see a psychological portrayal of a father and mother gone wrong. Our society is full of one or more parent that neglect their child to such a point that they become nothing more than beast. I have never seen a better horror flick since Silent of the Lambs. Vernon Sloane is far more evil than Hannibal Lector by being in so many ways just like one of us.
