A fantastic book, with seven more following. This series by Ralph Moody opens with the family's move from New England to a new home in Colorado. The move is necessary because of his father's health issue with his lungs in the severe Northern winters. The main character is the boy, Ralph, but includes each member of the family. Friends are also well presented and developed, bringing a fully rounded picture of life as it occurred i Colorado at that time.
The young Ralph presents clearly the ups and downs of a boy growing into a new environment, The family and community are also well developed.
This book, (and indeed, the series, get a "must read" rating for families who want not just entertainment, but a springboard for discussions of history, "growing up" issues, and the repeated challenges of decision-making in a world totally new to them all. The concept of making life-molding decisions is seldom presented in today's highly technical and electronic society. Our Mother read Little Britches to us as we were growing up, and I believe it helped to equip us with strong positive values. The book is available in print and electronically. I discovered the rest of the series a few years ago, and delight in reading each one.
