My dad enlisted in the Air Force so he wouldn't be drafted in 1967 (I think, but it may have been '66). He had an aptitude for computers (so very new back then) and was sent to Alaska instead of Vietnam. My mom & I were able to be with him in Alaska as well. I am very grateful for all of that. So that mixed with the fact that I am a nurses made this book hit hard for me.
He passed away 9 years ago & this book made me think of him and all the other Vietnam vets I know, uncles, my friend’s parents, my father in law. So few stories have been written about Vietnam. Historical fiction has always been my favorite genre. And Kristin Hannah is such a great writer.
