In the very beginning I was so excited in anticipation of something terribly beautiful and Gothic, sinister and intelligent. Tom Sturridge is breathtaking, like an Egon Schiele painting. And I expexted the rest of the characters to be equally impressive. But for some reason I was unimpressed., with the exception of brilliant David Thewlis, who was menacing enough. The rest is just generic and uninspiring. Lucifer, who is supposed to be the scariest angel of them all is just .. meh. Death is just your friendly neighborhood Reaper who looks like any other girl. Desire is glamorous but I couldn't figure out why he holds a grudge and what exactly happened between him and Dream. And by the Vortex episode I was completely checked out, I couldn't bring myself to care about any of them. Some characters were so lackluster, like Ken and Barbie, it begged the question why they were there at all. It was was very diffictult to watch. Even delightful Stephen Fry couldn't save that tepid pool of nothingness decorated with a random Broadway performance. Serial killers were so boring as if they were really members of Sereal convention. So disappointing. My only hope is that the second season will be different, that they will take it back to the first episode's mood.
