I took a chance on this book, and I tried not to compare it to Twilight. There are similarities throughout, though, that made it hard not to do so. When I began the Twilight series, I was immediately engrossed and could hardly put any of the books down. The writing in “Crave” is a bit different, as it should be, because every author is original…but there were some negatives for me.
The cursing was a turn-off, and there were many repetitive phrases throughout. There was too much detail about (what I felt were) unimportant factors and not enough detail written about certain characters or situations…one hundred pages in, and I still didn’t have a clear image of the female protagonist’s physical appearance. I also found it a strange feeling to read a novel in first person, present tense…I’m used to reading first person written in past tense, which feels smoother somehow. The first half of the book could hardly keep my attention, but I trudged on.
To summarize, I plan to read the second book in the series, but I hope that it’s not as slow to start as the first; that details are written early and spread evenly throughout the novel; and that the phrasing becomes less repetitive.
