It’s difficult to not compare Silent Hill F to other games in the series. A clunky melee combat system, the only way to progress through most of the game, holds the game back significantly. Further, there’s no real “horror” to speak of, beyond some gross imagery. There’s no “jump scares”, which would be fine if the atmosphere was even partly tense. Whilst the areas are reassembly interesting, they quickly become boring after thirty minutes in each with repetitive “fetch 3 of X then solve a puzzle” and the same four respawning enemy types that never innovate through the whole game.
I like the story, and am supportive of any game that tries something new, but wish they’d made it more enjoyable to play. I also find the setting, protagonist, and characters very interesting - something of a missed opportunity.
I paid $130 AUD based on glowing reviews and regret it deeply. It’s “fine”, but truly best to wait for a sale. Given the 10-13 hour rough gameplay time, I don’t feel I got my moneys worth.
