I was beyond excited when I saw the previews for the live action Mulan. The 90s cartoon version of the movie is definitely one of my favorite Disney animation films. After watching the cartoon version recently during the COVID quarantine I became even more found of the film as an adult.
Spoilers ahead.. but seriously I wouldn't recommend spending $30 to watch this thing...
The live-action movie was a total flop in my opinion. First of all the original plot of the movie was changed in certain aspects, but in all the wrong ways.. There was a random bird-lady that made no sense. Mulan was already a ninja warrior before she even went to the army, and was basically a Star Wars Jedi when she went to the matchmaker in the beginning. All the great music was cut from the film, and Mushu was no where to be found. Oh, and the hansom captain was MIA. The action scenes were cringe-worthy.. For instance, totally ridiculous that they could catch an arrow?!
The only redeeming quality of the movie is the beautiful cinematography and landscape backgrounds.
I have actually been disappointed by most of the live-action movies Disney has been making over the past several years, but this one takes the prize for the worst remake in history. Honestly, with the live actions, I think they are trying to take a fresh approach to the stories, but all they really need to do is make the same movie, but in live-action. There may be some fans out there that appreciate the changes, but I'm not one of them.
