The Netflix rendition of ATLA is a gigantic let down. If you had your hope up because of the trailer, let me point out the differences:
Aang – He is a fun filled child who we get to grow with and experience his journey as he starts from ignoring his responsibilities to embracing his destiny as the world defender. Instead, we get to see a whinny, victimised, one-dimensional character who isn’t inspiring, emotional, or captivating as the original Aang ... but the actor so desperately wants to be.
Katara - instead of beloved character who was so caring and joyful, we get another feminist icon (who could've seen that coming)
Sokka – Instead of the comic relief, he is just kind of there. Not terrible but missed the point of Sokka.
The other characters and events that happen during the season are below parr and they cross many episodes and change the story line. The bending is terrible and look like it was developed in 2006.
I’d never watch it again.
The ONLY benefit that came from this remake was the ‘Leaves from the Vine’ song which still pulls at the heart strings and the accompanying speech Zuko gives to his uncle. Banging moment.
