I really loved this book despite its relentless bleakness.
The enduring love between Agnes and Shuggie leaps off the pages.
The tone is surprising unsentimental which stops it descending into a maudlin vortex.
It is raw and almost feral at times.
Despite this there are loads of wonderful vignettes that keep the story moving forward.
