This is actually one of the only albums I’ve ever been able to listen to from the first song to the last with 0 skips. The care and thought and historical sourcing that went into the creation of this body of work is so evident. The commentary on the history of country music, the way she shone a spotlight on the Black women who paved the way and the Black women currently striving for success in the genre, and everything in between was so beautiful. I loved the tie-ins to other genres of music, the cover of Blackbird was gorgeous and helped introduce the song to a new generation, and her groundbreaking push for inclusiveness in the genre is inspiring. I have been a longtime fan of hers and I will continue to be so, she is one of the most gifted musicians of our time and I challenge anyone to give any critique that doesn’t somehow circle around to either expecting one woman to single-handedly solve every social problem in the world or isn’t a thinly veiled attempt to tell her to stay in her lane (AKA what her socially expected place is as a Black woman and musician) that she has proven time and time again she can go beyond. Much love from one fan!
