This movie is a big disappointment.
In my opinion, there are several flaws:
(1) The story is set in Venice, but we see almost nothing of this beautiful city. Only the first few minutes and the last few minutes.
(2) The main story is set inside a Venetian palazzo during the night. Many scenes are too dark. It is not easy to see what is going on.
(3) Several female actors look almost alike. They wear the same clothes and they have same kind of hair. It is difficult to distinguish them from each other.
(4) There is a lot of noise in this movie. It is constantly raining outside. Inside the house there are many sudden sounds. A cup drops on the floor. A door is closed. All these sounds are like explosions.
(5) While I was watching this movie, I often had to ask myself:
** What is happening here?
** What is the plot?
What went wrong?
Perhaps a partial explanation is the fact that the director Kenneth Branagh is also a member of the cast. He plays the leaning role.
The director is outside. He can focus on the whole production.
A member of the cast is inside. He or she must focus on the character he or she has to play.
If you are a director of a movie, you should not be an actor in the same movie. This is a golden rule.
Kenneth Branagh has broken this golden rule and the result is a movie which is a big disappointment.
