I agree that this novel was a bit of a struggle to get into. I am now toward the final quarter and am racing along. The rhythm of the writing and dialog is wonderful and propels me into that time period. However, the frequent use of the work "fuck", and "fucking", does not ring true for that time period. I most definitely am not opposed, at all, to the use of "fuck", but it is very jarring to read in the context and rhythm of the dialog in that time period. I imagine folks would use the word "damn", possibly, but not "fuck". As I was reading the feel became reminiscent of the brilliant T.V. series "Deadwood", set in the same time period as this novel, and the dialog was very similar.
