Insightful, exciting, entertaining. A look into wildfire with the emerging 1980's management approach to dealing differently from the past with wildland fires. This was also the story of the fabled "Longshot" fire crew of the North Rim of Grand Canyon. Specifically, two protagonists, the professor and Buck share their life and adventures in the world of fire as well as bureaucratic decisions that would impact the famous crew, known for its' competency, thoroughness, and effectiveness. It was a fast read, insightful into the smoke eating world of these heroes. The style reminded me a little of Ed Abbey, which was an influence upon them (and also happened to work there back in '60's). Had me laughing, and at times, cringing for their hardships. Thankful they served. Recommend this for the outdoor and environmental enthusiast.
