Reading the reviews of this TV show are similair to the underlying theme of interpretation and acceptance. The hum or sound that the main character starts to hear is i think wished for by the characters who wish to experience a life bigger than their current experience.
I am still unsure if the pupil who also heard the hum existed and wasn't a representation of societal boundaries and a disbelief that any relationship outside social constructs must be a power imbalance that is sexual. My belief in the boy's lack of true existence is the teacher returning to her " role " at the end of the show and her trying to find him again and the gateway back to the hum.
The film " The Shout " which is superb and struck similar themes of societal belief , control and acceptance of decisions and actions that may be beyond our comprehension.
A reviewer summed up the ending where the main character is on the toilet while her husband and daughter use the same space and this negates any of her privacy and personal space making her existence simply unheard whereas when she could " hear " the hum she existed and created dimensions outside the family construct.
When the hum is reduced to a gas facility i felt such sadness - it was akin to a Mozart piece being reduced to a musical score sheet , the emotion , the power and possibility simply reduced to a flat representation.
