I thought this movie was absolutely great! One of the best I’ve seen in years. I loved the Psychological subtlety that many critics seem to have missed. I though Joaquin Phoenix performance was phenomenal and I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t win the Oscar for his performance as JOKER. This move is dark, very dark but with a glowing purpose. I don’t understand the “violence hysteria“ around this movie, because I’ve seen plenty of movies with equal or more violence, but usually those movies seem to be ok, (not even rated R in some cases) because it either mindless violence or divided sides of good and evil. I think what scares critics about this movie, is that the line between good and evil is quite fuzzy. Without further explanation or a spoiler, you’ll see that the square line of social sanity or insanity is also completely blurry. If you don’t want a spoiler, don’t read any further. For example Arthur’s mother seems on the surface to be innocently harmless, but her infantilism and complete inability to deal with reality, makes her on a deep psychological level quite terrifying and an evil person. When we see paradoxes like that, we can see a bit into our own dark psyche which scares us way more than any form of physical violence. These kind of subtleties show us an opposite reality than we perceive in our daily lives an that is what makes this movie a brilliant masterpiece. So if you are in for a deep, dark and meaningful ride, go see this move.
