When I watched the movie “Handia” (The Giant) it was a deeply moving experience. It was based on a real person, Miguel Joaquin Eleicegui (1818–1861) who suffered from Gigantism and was nickname the "Giant from Altzo”. A historical drama that captured actual events, like the Carlist War and the cultural mores of the time. The cinematography was brilliant, performances of actors compelling and the dialogue authentic. This is not a feel good movie, as the themes are quite dark. It is an accurate portrayal of what it’s like to be tall, then and now. As a tall female, myself (6ft 1) I identified with the character of Joaquin. The issues that resonate with me and other tall people include, unwanted attention, physical problems, negative stereotypes and perceptions, relationship and interpersonal problems and loneliness. If you are curious about what it’s really like to be tall, I would highly recommend this movie. Hopefully, you will gain a fresh perspective and develop greater empathy towards tall people.
