This is a movie I watched then rewatched immediately to see it in a new light. To me it was about how God gives a person a path to the discovery of truth. Hobbes being a detective, God gives him a mystery to solve, and a villain to pursue in the form of Azazel. I like to think of the whole movie as a conversation between two characters...Hobbes (Man) and Azazel (God). Watching it in that frame of mind and seeing Azazel speaking to Hobbes as not only the "bad guys", but the "good guys" as well, you can see how every step of the way Hobbes is being handed the clues directly from Azazel (God). Goodness, there was a time I could have gone on and on about the brilliance of this movie.
