As always Woody Shaw delivers.I’ve been a fan of his playing for a while (don’t forget Freddie Hubbard was also at the top of his game during this period).
To my ears the mix is a little bass heavy ( and I’m a bass player ) but Stafford James swings so well and his technique is flawless,so that really isn’t an issue and eventually the balance sorts itself out.
Pianist Larry Willis comping and soloing on this date is outstanding as is Carter Jefferson’s Coltrane esque approach on Saxophone but especially on the Soprano.
Finally, Vic Lewis on drums completes the line up with his tastefully exquisite rhythmic support.
This is wonderful record reflecting the period that jazz found itself in, expanding melodic and harmonic compositions, ridiculous improvisation and a freedom that is so lacking in todays crazy world.
