*SPOILER ALERT*
Off the back, this is not a kid/family movie. The beginning opening up like a “Once an upon a time” bit makes you think that, but as I continued to watch I got teen/adult vibes, no question about it. The storyline is great, the script is engaging and funny and I love the animation but a lot of the content and conversation in this movie touch on sensitive subject matters that are inappropriate children to hear.
First, Nimona’s dark humor is way too much as it has violence throughout the film and constant talks of murder (Main character says the word murder so many times) and physically hurting people. Let’s not forget the suicide prompting in the middle and actual attempt at the end. There’s also that time where Nimona acts as a paranormal little boy terrorizing and kidnapping a man, which I found quite frightening if you ask me. As a grown up watching knowing that this was labeled as a kids movie, I was highly uncomfortable and disturbed.
Next, the LGBTQ agenda is pushed subtlety in the beginning where most kids would probably miss it (any adult could clearly see what’s going on) but at the end it ABRUPTLY ends with two men kissing. With how the movie was going I had a feeling they were going to take it there, and they did. Also I didn’t catch this until I read another review, but Nimona’s shapeshifting ability could also represent the No-binary community, as they don’t identify themselves as one thing, as Nimona doesn’t either and because of that they are outcast. Either way, nowhere in the description or rating does it warn you that there is LGBTQ content, which is highly misleading and disappointing. I feel as though I’ve been bamboozled into something I had no intention of watching. Parents PLEASE gate keep what your kids are watching. I have lost trust in the rating system of Netflix because of this movie.
Lastly, I do consider this movie to be a stab towards the faith based community. As a believer, there were a lot of phrases used by “the institution” to give of the vibe that were emulating a religious group, and it felt like my faith was being mocked. A woman was idiolized like she was god for something she did, had a whole system of schooling and training created around which turns out to be super judgemental and corrupted. Now, I know people will think what they want about Christianity because many people, past and present, have claimed to be Christian, but didn’t live like it but Christ is LOVE and His kingdom is not corrupt. I did not appreciate the satirizing of the faith.
In conclusion, the movie is not a bad film. I actually quite enjoyed its wit and action, aside from the major discrepancies regarding the film and its rating. If you want to have a violent, dark humored movie, go ahead! If you want to make a movie with a LGBTQ couple, do your thing! If you want to make a movie that’s trying to mock a religion (I wouldn’t do it because that’s disrespectful and condemning) but hey it’s a free country BUT don’t try to trick kids into watching a film so adult that it’ll make them question life and it’s darks truths after they watch it. It should be the parents choice to introduce these topics and not a movie that insinuated a kid/family movie vibe. I hope this helps someone pick their selections wisely for their child and self, and make you want to know more about the true and living God. Blessings.
