I was literally in the theater alone sobbing more than I ever had. The performances were phenomenal on all ends, amazing vocals, beautiful and raw story of a teen who was looking to be rescued from his own sad story and took on the persona of a hero. Recognizing his own lie, one he so wanted to believe, he eventually told the truth and saved the family’s reputation of the boy who committed suicide, while struggling with wanting to die himself. He found courage in how many people empathized with mental health issues, and the community was brought together. When he did tell the truth, things fell apart, but like his mom said, this is a learning moment, and will someday be so far away. It goes into trauma and what a family with absent parents is like. I was bawling at Evan’s mom’s song. All the songs were so powerful.
I genuinely don’t understand why people in reviews are saying this wasn’t good. The main character wasn’t in the right? Okay, but he was true and raw. You don’t like the actor because he’s too old? Okay…that seems to undercut the message of mental health awareness.
That being said, keep in mind that I haven’t read the book or seen the play. However, I am grateful to have witnessed this life-changing movie.
