I am a painter, Westcoast as opposed to east and I can tell you Maudie's life is pretty typical for female artists and to be fair some male artists. We don't have typical lives. We don't live the kind of lives overall that the mainstream can feel comforted and reassured by for our lifestyles.
The mainstream has it's own kind of paint brush for what success looks like and a life is appreciated by how much it succeeds in whatever pigeon hole it resides in. It just ain't right or real for anyone.
My life is not unlike Maudie's and my work for that matter is not unlike hers, although I have had the benefit of an academic education. Art is soul work, or else it's just something to go with your couch. Soul work, take a look at Jean Michel Busquait, Outsider Art was the earlier name for his style and Maudie should be included in his style.
