This book is hard to put down. HOWEVER, it is not a very satisfying story. Without question, the leading character is a heroic man. sadly, while his heroism in WWII, was worthy, his heroism following his return was not.
The story of his escape from Japanese captivity, when the “slave ship” taking him to Japan was torpedoed, and subsequent joining
and leading guerrillas, came from real life. The Death March, of course, did as well. I don’t know...... Real life can be very unkind. Why write fiction that is so unkind in so many ways? Knowing now what I didn’t know when I started this book, I’d have passed on it.
