This show should be so much better than it is. It's hopelessly mediocre. The writing is very weak. The direction is not skillful. Clive Owen is the most interesting thing about it, but his engaging with us as Spade is unconvincing, nor is he committed. It is as though he feels unsupported.

Thompson's "sense of humor" shines through here and there in ways it does not in some of his other books. Confusing to follow at times, but it works anyway. I was no less confused than the main character, so it helped to put me into the story. I have not read all JT's books, maybe half. This one is fascinating. I have read it twice.
