It’s a work of fiction but there is no story. There is a historical summary of Johnny von Neumann’s life and accomplishments, directly followed by a historical summary of the evolution of computers defeating grand champions of chess and Go. With the qualifier that it’s not exactly historical, so some of the narrative is made up, but the reader can’t tell fact from fiction. Also: there is no attempt at making a connection between von Neumann and the AI game players; it just jumps from the one topic to the next. What a horrible waste of time, for both me as the reader and Labatut, as the author.
