This is the closest anyone has gotten to the disaster cycle on our planet. Every 12000 years the poles flip due to our location in the milky way and that causes this catastrophe cycle to occur again and again. No wonder we have so many ancient civilizations that are buried under us. We are about to be at the end of this cycle, btw. We've got about 20-40 years till it happens.
