I was hoping for something lighthearted and fun but left feeling really gross. I did love the Barbieland set, visuals were great.
I thought some of the commentators I've heard about the move were maybe making a bigger deal of it than necessary and exaggerating. I was unpleasantly surprised. I am totally for equality and empowering women, but I didn't expect this movie to be so blatantly anti-men (and anti-caring for babies? I know that opening scene was supposed to be humorous but it was really bizarre and kind of disturbing). I really thought when the Barbies were plotting to manipulate and bring down the Kens that she would at some point be like "wait, this is no better than what they did to us, we can be better than this" and aim for some actual equality instead. But nope, they completed their mission of having only women in charge and locking men out of everything but meaningless roles, and all the Barbie's cheered and smiled and Ken cried. Ew. The resolution of Kens happily accepting their new roles since "leading is hard" felt forced and superficial.
This whole movie is not a message I would ever want to give to either a daughter or a son. I regret wasting the 5.50 I paid for a half-price-day ticket.
