In terms of film making this is not a very good film. Never in my life have I ever been so torn while viewing a film. Rami Malik quite literally becomes Freddie Mercury and it’s increible to watch. That alone makes the movie worth watching however his performance gets wasted in a very by the numbers, cliche and boring bio pic. This is no where near the quality level of movies like Walk the Line or Ray. Hell i got to know Dewey Cox more than I got to know Freddie in “Bohemian Rhapsody.” And Dewey Cox isn’t a real person. There are a number of super cringe worthy scenes that will make you feel like you’re watching a made for TV movie. The film moves very fast, not diving too deep into any aspects of his life. It’s also well documented that Freddie lived a wild life, known to be extremely promiscuous and prone to drug use. This being a PG13 film, hardly makes any mention of it at all. You see some coke on a table once for 2 seconds. It never feels like the film makers respected the man or the audience.
That being said, Malik is simply breathetakingly good at being Freddie you won’t be able to take your eyes off him. The performance stuck with me. This might be the worst movie to ever have an actor win best actor at the oscars. The performance scenes are fun and I really enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes of creating the songs even though those scenes also dive into cliche and corny territories. Very slight thumbs up from me since I loved Malik so much.
