Unfortunately exactly what I expected. The first gladiator is literally my all time favorite movie. I feared this movie would be a watered down non stop predictable action movie like all movies for the last 10 years or so. Started off with like 6 sentences of words on the screen for the entire backstory. Then bam zero character development just straight to action. When he lost his woman I didn’t even know her name yet or his so I didn’t care at all. Not emotional whatsoever. That’s how the movie started that’s not even a spoiler. It was immensely more of a fumble than I ever imagined it to be. It’s not possible to have a moving and memorable film without initial character development. No one cares for the protagonist if they don't know the first thing about him and the writing is corny. Absolute waste of Pedro’s talent, fake Jake Jill-and-hall dude was a terrible actor, the emperors were trying so hard to play villains it seemed like a parody. The entire movie is basically just a terribly written unfunny parody of the original Gladiator.
