First, let me clearly and wholeheartedly recommend this book to you. Days of Sand will make you feel happy, sad, overwhelmed, and hopeful. Set aside the time to read, experience, and process what you will read.
Perhaps it would be appropriate to simply say that this book cannot be captured by a review. Perhaps believing this shows that you have read it in the first place.
However, if we do not try to capture the most ineffable qualities of human nature, even though we will fall short in the process, are we even acknowledging that these qualities exist? After reading this book, I find the most meaningful and clear messages not in the metaphors and extensive parallels one can draw between the motifs “days of sand” and “nights of dust”; but I see them in the silence. In the absence of an explanation.
To provide any review of the literal content and structure of the story would be reductive.
It is perfect.
Days of sand shows us that perfection does not ultimately exist; but that perfection is, ineffably, in the the humanity of one’s devotion to what they hold dear.
