Absolutely a page turner. In the 90s I was a Stephen King fan reading greats including Misery, Needful Things, The Dark Tower Series, Thinner, The Dark Half, and Bag of Bones to name a few. After awhile however, I lost connection with King. It’s been decades now and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some of those stories on film.
Fairytale is the first King novel I’ve picked up in decades and I’m sure glad I did. From the first sentence to the last I was gripped and pulled in to the tale of Charlie Reade. The book is long and I was so glad because I already knew I never wanted it to end. That feeling is interesting since the main character makes several references about seeing the movie ‘The Never Ending Story’ as a kid throughout the book. King weaves classical fairytales, dark fantasy, and science fiction into a thrilling and magical modern day adventure in a more compelling and seductive manner more than any of his other novels I loved so much. I almost hope there is talk of a miniseries although apart of me is afraid it could never live up to the novel.
The audiobook is fantastic as the narrator is perfect and so are King’s cameos throughout. This is definitely a must read. Bravo!
