We have watched it every week. Wanted to see how they handled the story. It is a respectful but quirky treatment of His story. If you're hung up on the 2C thing then you'll be offended. The story spins the adult Jesus gathering the first disciples. But He calls Mary Magdalene first, not Peter (?). Peter (for my eye) is too short and too skinny to be a leader. Matthew is a strange semi-autistic fellow who compulsively takes notes and insists on calculating numbers with precision. If you know Scripture, you can follow and anticipate the story line. You'll get the water-into-wine event and some healings. Otherwise you might be surprised by the overflowing fishing boat, the Samaritan woman at the well, the pools of Bethesda. You won't see Jesus' baptism or the presence of the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist arrives as a somewhat crazed fellow who is VERY familiar with Jesus, his cousin. But John's beheading is omitted from the events per se. It is only mentioned in later conversation. The Sermon on the Mount is portrayed as a joint production between Jesus and Matthew ... and Jesus spends considerable time pondering His words and message. My complaint is the portrayal of Jesus as more of a man and less the Son of God. There is no eminence of God portrayed at all. When Jesus prays to the Father, it is in secret away from the disciples. Where does He go anyway? The KEY definers of Jesus' holiness are left to your imagination (but fully revealed in Scripture). Worse, the script works hard to show Him as calm, collected, focused, struggling with his merry band of followers as a manager, and doing His miracles almost unnoticeably (water into wine only after dismissing everybody from the room. Healing the paralytic by speaking the words in front of everyone). He never sheds a tear for John the Baptist. He never appears to be larger than a man who does some occasional miracles. So, for the casual seeker, does The Chosen work? Ask them. For a deeply rooted Christian who yearns to see thousands come to saving grace .... I remain casually entertained but not in awe. PS If you want to see "Matthew" in real life, check the sermon style of Tim Mackie on Youtube ... it is uncanny how similar they are !!
