The book is about the adventures of two brothers, Terry and Martin Dean, living in a sleepy little town in backwater Australia. It focuses mainly on the life of Martin Dean, who's constantly overshadowed by his little brother. The entire story is documented by Jasper Dean, son of Martin Dean.
I liked the book a lot, and I found myself agreeing with Martin's view of humanity and the world. There are lots of characters in this story. Each character has an interesting backstory to offer and an important role to play. The book covers a variety of themes: Depression, family issues, philosophy, cynism, murder, suicide, sexual idiosyncrasies etc. to name a few. I was on tenterhooks while reading the twists and turns in the plot; they were ingeniously constructed and inspired the reader to find out what's next.
While I did enjoy the slightly different but intertwined storylines, I became weary of the constant switching of viewpoints between the protagonists. This book presents no clear moral or purpose. I found nothing to inspire the reader. The never-ending scepticism of the characters bores and creates a low opinion for the main character.
Overall, I'd like to say that the book is a good read for people with a taste for thrillers, crime, mystery, philosophy etc. As the book involves various adult themes, foul language, sexual content and substance use; I would recommend this book for mature teenagers and adults.
