I think this book was quite amazing in its insight into grief, particularly in children with such a restricted view of the world. Sexual suppression, curiosity and perversions go hand in hand and all experiences were consequences somehow of the death of a brother. Translations into English often get annoying though. Singing Christmas songs to St Nicholas? Really? Only St Nicholas songs are sung then. The Dutch keep the 2 festivals completely separate. And mangels? What are they? I looked it up, thinking they must be some mangled objects. Instead, I found they were beets, or sugar beets. Why not just call them that? Generally, great, pithy language even in the translations.
