The Barbie movie is not a movie for children, but a movie for women. Barbie perfectly encapsulates the idea and struggle of growing from a girl into a woman. The idea and harsh realities of the real world. The movie critiques both the idea of matriarchy and patriarchy. Greta Gerwig did a fantastic job showcasing the idea of being a woman and learning how unfair the world is. Gerwig demonstrates how the patriarchy not only affects women but men and how it truly benefits no one, similar to how the matriarch of BarbieLand only makes the day the same all the time, and Ken's forever pining after the Barbies and well with patriarchy, you already know. It's definitely a mother-and-daughter film, that helps show the severity of growing up as a girl. Ryan Gosling's character shows similarities to the feeling of growing up with boys and suddenly they became men who you didn't recognize, It also is a great example of how the real world's patriarchy can heavily affect men, I.E Ken feeling as though he can't cry in front of Barbie.
