The look and sound of this game were absolutely exquisite, as is the storytelling. The platforming is also immensely satisfying, as is the steady progression of abilities. Unfortunately, the game is held back from being a masterpiece by a combat system that feels tacked on and unnecessary, and punishing gameplay that demands perfection (particularly in long sequences without any checkpoints), in a game that otherwise seems to be about exploration and joyful platforming. I would much rather play Celeste as a pacifist option or Hollow Knight if I wanted combat.
