Oh Good Lord.
So I'm gonna be honest, I grew up with Dora playing in the background for my younger siblings. And seeing the trailer I was excited, I thought that Nickelodeon had taken the childhood show that I remembered watching with my siblings, and had made it into a fun comedy for teenagers and adults. Something that kids could watch but adults wouldn't mind sitting down to watch with their children. I thought it'd be like other kids movies they'd made in the past, albeit animated ones but still. I was under the impression from the trailer that this would be a fun movie to watch and be nostalgic over.
And I was given this travesty of a movie. From the very beginning of this movie, I knew we were heading down a dark path. The opening CGI was so bad, I can only liken it to Fairly Odd Parents live action movie and that one was better and the CGI of 2011 seems like it was better than this movie. But I could look past bad CGI, I have before, and I probably will again. But that's not all this movie gave me, and I wish I get could the time I gave it back.
I expected better, and the few times Dora talked to the camera and made everyone look at weird could have been excused, if done better. But then they throw you into the movie, and Dora is nothing but an embarrassment in the worst way. I find it hard to believe that any of the writers remember what high school was like, because this ain't it chief. The high school scenes felt less like an adult was remembering high school and more like a child was reading a horror story of how "high school is life or death". I found myself laughing not at the jokes but at the pure absurdness of this movie and writing.
As I said, I hoped for something that was funny and fun for all ages, and that people who remembered Dora and watched it growing up, would be able to enjoy. But no one who watched and enjoyed Dora could possibly think this was good.
The jokes were childish and sad, don't even get me started on explaining the poop song, and how fart sounds are so hilarious apparently.
This movie was a trick. It was a click bait. A movie to make people who watched Dora as a kid want to see someone make their childhood show into something good. And it was a massive failure. Honestly, I think children might be able to write a better Dora movie, at least I think it would have less poop jokes.
I leave you with a warning to NOT watch this movie, and to NOT spend your money on it. It isn't worth it. I don't think I'll ever trust Nickelodeon with another live action movie again. The only joke that deserves any recognition is the, "Oh yes let's call the police. 911 come find us, we're at the corner of Rain, and Forest."
That was the best line of the movie and honestly the only line worth anything. If you want to buy this movie for your children, go ahead. They'll probably enjoy it, but don't expect to enjoy it. It isn't worth it and I'm incredibly disappointed at Nickelodeon. They had the money and they had the man power to make this good. And they didn't do it.
