I see a lot of people upset about how confusing it is, how ambiguous the ending is, even a few comments on how they wished it were more violent, and I think they miss the point of the movie. The trailers make it look like some horror movie, so I can understand people thinking they were misled, but for me it was an exercise in realizing just how ready I was to interpret the many signs of mental illness as horror tropes. Throughout the movie I kept expecting the turning point where she kills someone, or was possessed by a demon, or aliens attacked, but as it went on it slowly dawned on me that none of that was going to happen, and this was really just a tragic progression of some poor woman’s mental illness, from her perspective, which is one that far too many people truly do experience. It was like A Beautiful Mind, if instead there was no realization or overcoming. When you look at all the weird stuff as just her psychosis, I think it makes the movie darker and more tragic than had it been an actual horror movie.
