I can't say it was good, but I can't say it was terrible, either.
Let me explain.
Taron Egerton adds a lot of charm to Robin, and while it would be very fun to have him play this character in a well put-together production... This film just drops the ball. The character is hard to follow, straying from the story by having him return solely to win back a girl he lost. Sounds cliche? You haven't heard the best part. A guy burns half his face... And he becomes the villain. Never heard that before.
Action scenes are cool, but predictable... Romantic subplot could be done well, but it takes up a lot of the story, is predictable, and ends up painting the female lead in a very "damsel-in-distress" way.
Again, they could have done better with Marion, as her first scene is great in terms of the badass-thief vibes I get from her. But they soon fade and I'm left wanting for more. Bring her to thieve alongside Robin... Maybe make it a PRIORITY to show how she inspired Robin to steal from the rich, give to the poor. I dunno.
The aesthetic is kinda off-putting, there's no clear time period for the outfits they wear, and the party seems very Great Gatsby-esque to me. Perhaps that was the point, but there was no carry-over from the high society dress style to the day-to-day dressings of the people. It was jarring to see these styles jammed together, and could have been done well with some tweaking of the peasant costumes (to make them look old, but with the aesthetic of modern clothes).
Characters were, yeah, predictable. I'm a sucker for a charming lead, but I lost interest in Robin as there wasn't really anyone for this charm to bounce off of. Oh well, I guess.
They obviously try to cram a lot of modern-day jabs in this film, and, if done well, could have very well added to the overall message of the film. Again, unfortunately, the writers seemed to be unable to juggle all of these subplots, instead opting to jump from one to the other to the other and it ended up becoming somewhat of a mess. Don't get me wrong, the ideas were THERE, they just couldn't have been fully fleshed out alongside all the other modern-day ideas. It's a bummer, really.
Overall, a movie I'd watch if I'm bored and wanted to see some Egerton shooting arrows at stuff. Or I can just go watch Kingsmen. โค๏ธ
