If I hadn’t seen the original movie, I’d have no clue what was going on in this one. They took out the main story line, removed all the original characters personalities, and made it about a girl who faces no discrimination, no hardships, and has no personality.
Might I also point out the god awful editing. The land and buildings are beautiful- don’t get me wrong- but there’s fifty different angled shots in the span of a minute.
I felt no emotions from any of the characters. Mulan’s actress is beautiful, yes, but if they’d made a cardboard cut out of her and used it in the movie instead, I wouldn’t have known the difference. Not to mention the fact that the actress supports the police brutality that’s happening in Hong Kong.
What about the “villain turned good” after realising they were a feminist and didn’t want to fight Mulan because she was leading an army- and yet she had no problem killing (or attempting to) the soldiers literally five minutes beforehand.
And the Phoenix? Like? Why is it even there? It does nothing the whole movie.
I already disliked the movie five minutes in after a ten year old Mulan jumps and flips on a roof to catch a chicken with awful editing and later catches a whole set of tea cups and saucers on her head and shoe while balancing on one foot.
Now I’m not Asian, so I can’t comment on whether the cultural aspects of the movie are accurate, but I can’t imagine it’s good- especially from the reviews I’ve seen about the topic.
Ahhh, it feels so good to rant about an awful movie. It sucks that I was looking forward to it. Disappointment ensues if you like the animated film and think it’ll be anywhere near as good.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk :)
Let’s be original Disney. Write a new movie maybe.
