It wasn't just a TV show. It was a cultural phenomenon that resonated with the masses for 8 epic seasons. The character development and world-building in GOT was so organic that you are left completely immersed in its world. That's probably the reason season 8 received the amount of hate it did. The cause just didn't justify the effect. They could have had the same ending and people would have stood by it had the character and events been organically driven towards the outcome.
