It is utterly pretentious, far too long and incredible. The characterisation is very poor and she has a need to display a deep knowledge of ‘high art’, classical music and serious literature which certainly doesn’t accord with her highly exaggerated characters, for whom one has no sympathy. It is a struggle to get to the end, and left me wondering how on earth this book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
