This show is excellent. I did not read the book or see the Golden Compass, so this is my first introduction to the story. Books will beat out a show 99% of the time. There is too much detail which does not translate on screen. However, I have found this show, on its own to be really well done. James McAvoy is a draw, yet I'm sure his schedule is filled to the brim with projects. So, he is not in it that much. However, the cast carries the show really well. The main character Lare (spell?) is an interesting character. At first she seems like a truant girl, but then she becomes resourceful and courageous. The Gyptian community is entertaining. The daemons are well done graphically and so is panserbjørne, the bear. I also like how they continually say, first and last names. For someone who does not have prior knowledge, it's very helpful. Couldn't afford to see Hamilton, so it was nice to see Lin-Manuel act for the first time. I know this is a very different role. He does a good job with the caricaturiste. This story is really refreshing in a sea of new content from all streaming services. Because there is so much, I have become more selective. If you have limited time and want to see a well-crafted show with few flaws, I recommend His Dark Materials.
