Imagine waiting 7-8 years for a sequel to one of the most well written and structured novels/movies/games you have ever played, but when the thing comes out it's poorly paced, has extremely one dimensional characters, and shoehorns in main characters from the original just so they can use the name of the series. It's like if they dropped a character from a kid's cartoon into something like LotR. The plot itself wasn't even halfway decent, and that's compared to anything. It falsely claims that the game can end in over 26 different ways. 4 of them being finish the game in a straight line and you finish all of them. The other being the last 20 minutes of the game having 2 paths. One with a secret boss that wasn't all that interesting. The other 20 were jokes. Like uninstall your OS chip to kill yourself.
Also, due to the characters being how they are, and having no actual development, and the fact that they can just revive the moment they die in the story makes me just not care. They are never in actual danger. They are never in any situiation where the story could become tense or hold an emotional atmosphere.
The music didn't work for the game due to copy/paste older music that was designed to work with the plot of the first game. It never set a proper tone. All of it felt far too upbeat for the kind of story they were trying to portray.
The gameplay itself is also extremely repetive. Being able to mash both attack and black at the same time to never take damage if you don't want to durring the 3rd person parts of the game removes any kind of fun. The top down parts feel like a half baked version of something like raiden or touhou. Then the sidescrolling parts kinda work, but it's using the same gameplay as the 3rd person parts, so there isn't much new there.
Oh, one other thing while I'm on this tangent. They ruined the characters from the first game. Made them completely meaningless. Having the sacrifice of one character that set the tone for the ending of the first game come back, and be a hahaha silly willy goofball shop keeper doesn't sit well with me.
