A let down ...
It took all the things you didn’t like from the original and put it into the remake and took all you loved from it and didn’t use it or did not develope it at all.
The original although flawed and looks like a made for TV movie from 89, had some very chilling creepy moments.
That were never touched upon in the new film.
I won’t get into specifics of these for spoiler sakes but for examples.
The ghost trying to save the family was underutilized unlike the original who was chillingly creepy as he was used in a practical visually haunting way.
The story of Zelda was creepy and haunting in the original as it truly felt raw and dark- in the new one its a very dumb almost satirical way of scaring you with that character.
The father in the original was given some kind of redemption ... here just everything is for not.
I didn’t feel scale and the entire film’s editing in some places lost me and it took me a moment to figure out if it was another day another time or place .
The horror here is lacking terribly- Gone is any form of suspense build up and you would think after people have seen the conjuring films 1-2, that they would have a clear vision in how to do suspense.
The film was a shallow hull of its predecessor and the sad thing is the original was a shallow hull of a good story... it could have been good but lacked as well. I feel that way with most Stephen king films ... they are great ideas but executed poorly and that is why it’s sooo great to see good writers take stories like IT and make it work so beautifully ...
But here they couldn’t take a good idea and make a good story just like they couldn’t back in 89 when they made the original and neither could king when he wrote the book.
