When action movie director meets historical drama, you get a film that focuses on action scenes, in this case, epic battles, and practically no background or context to explain Napoleon or Josephine's character, motives, etc. The film begins with Napoleon's rise in power with no explanation of what got him there, and there's no way to understand his obsession with Josephine. The movie was almost cartoonish in its lack of depth. You could almost feel Ridley Scott's longing to get to the battle scenes. A subplot involving Napoleon's marriage to produce an heir was left hanging. Joaquin Phoenix captured Napoleon's brutishness and lack of refinement, but few other aspects of what had to be a very complex personality. Overall, really disappointing. Killers of the Flower Moon was at least five times better.
