A spectacularly well shot production of an original epic fantasy performed live on a 360 degree stage in Japan. Fans of anime will immediately recognize that this is a brilliant translation of that genre’s dynamic visuals, lightening paced action choreography, classical character types with colorful modern styling, pop metal scores, poignant drama and goofy humor to the stage. Viewers less familiar with this type of narrative will see influences of Tolkien, Seven Samurai and The Magnificent 7, the Rocky Horror Picture Show and even Into the Woods. The plot is simple: unlikely allies, each bearing their own heavy regrets and secrets, battle a villain bent on conquering Japan. But the clever, energetic staging and performances as well the smart often funny script overcome the subtitles to create an easy to follow, fast paced and entertaining experience. Adventurous viewers and fantasy fans who don’t mind reading subtitles (these are well done) will find a lot to enjoy.
