Scotland was the last country in Europe to get soap, and in some ways it says it all. That was my historical intro to the country as I drove over a bridge someone had spray painted with the words 'Scotland Free or a Desert" and this was in the 80's. if you compare it to BraveHeart, it is a pity because it is just as raw and more authentic in many respects. The performances were excellent. Chris Pine was amazing. Yes it is all blood and guts but you are getting a review from a person who wrote to the Aberdeen library's registrar to get to view the left arm of an Earl, which is the mummified remains of the bit they got when he was drawn and quartered for treason. At one point they boiled the Earl of Montrose, with the blessing of the local Sheriff, and all drank from the broth as cannabalism meant ex-communication and loss of all your property-so everybody kept their mouths shut. Why did they murder him? To sell whiskey under the table to French pirates. So this could have been a mini series, as Scotland is a complex and wild place. They are British but never English. They are that different and that tough. If you think it's too gory, it was actually a lot worse and I loved every minute of it.
