Great social commentary more than anything. Bale absolutely nails being a rich snob, turns out he is a severe schizophrenic. He's the one among many other retards who are all uniform in terms of their obsession with the material life. The story would have been the same if it had been shared from the perspective of the other characters, that is what the director wanted to show.
