To start, I'll say that if you haven't played a Mario game, you won't get much out of this film. This is the main reason I believe that critic scores are typically low for this movie, how movie critics do you expect to have even a surface level understanding of the inner workings of the Super Mario universe? Yeah, not a lot. But even if you don't have said understanding you can still have with the Mario movie if you go in expecting simple fun. Beyond such exterior things, the film's visuals are some of the best in recent memory, with a diverse set of colourful locations and characters. The score is obviously great, being that it's entirety is composed of borrowed themes from the games. Though don't let that make you think this score is unoriginal however, Brian Tyler does an amazing job weaving motifs from the games to create the score. Overall, funny plumber movie good :)
