Sadly a pretty dull season with an obvious identity crisis. It should have stood alone from the True Detective franchise. The only "connections" to the previous seasons were hamfisted easter eggs. It was completely different tonally and thematically.
Even if it did stand alone from the other seasons, there is simply not enough interesting content to warrant 6 episodes (it should have been a movie). Almost every episode is packed with filler or unmotivating character development.
The pacing/editing is also wildly incoherent. Episodes flit back and forth from one boring plotline to the next and breakneck speeds. One example: At end of one of the episodes, Danvers discovers Navarro in a dissociative state with blood coming out of her ears while they are investigating a warehouse, leaving the audience on a cliffhanger. This is never addressed again (even though the murder victims were found with ruptured eardrums!!), and the next episode begins with Navarro & Danvers in a completely different location. The intrigue set up by the previous episode has no payoff, as Navarro is rushed off to take part in other dull plotlines (like the riot at the mine) with no time to breath. The pacing is truly bonkers.
